How to create a statement on a large accent wall...

June 20, 2023

One of the most difficult design dilemmas for many of my clients is filling up a LARGE wall in their home. Whether it be in a foyer, staircase or the living space, a large wall can be overwhelming to decorate. One of the many mistakes I see is hanging art or decor that is just way too small for the wall. This will instantly make your home feel cheap and out of balance.

While large scale art and leaning mirrors are always good choices, one of my favorite designs tricks to fill up a massive wall is doubling up on sets of art work. This beautiful new build pictured above, had a massive foyer that was 30 ft. floor to ceiling. We bought two sets of stunning oversized brass plates and had them hung together to make a collected statement. Like I always say, there are three responses to a piece of design- yes, no and WOW! We always aim for WOW.

Here are some other options depending on your personal style and the size and height of your wall.

1. Hang a large piece of art or a gallery wall of smaller pieces.

2. Add shelves and display decorative objects or plants.

3. Hang a tapestry or decorative textile.

4. Install a large mirror to create the illusion of more space.

5. Create a focal point with a statement piece like a large clock or sculpture.

6. Install a mural or wallpaper to add visual interest.

7. Hang a collection of photographs or prints.

8. Create a statement wall with a bold paint color or pattern.

You can choose one or several of these options depending on your personal style and the size and height of your wall.
